According to the site www.lucytheelephant.org, a land developer named James V. Lafferty, Jr. was the brains behind the elephantine structure now known as Lucy, the Margate Elephant. It was built in 1881 in Atlantic City, for entertainment and amusement, and was one of three elephant structures Lafferty built. Thanks to preservationist-minded citizens of Margate, NJ, and architect John A. Milner, AIA of John Milner Associates, the present structure is restored and available for visiting all year round!
